Total War Attila Trailer Shows Off New City Siege Features Including Dynamic Fire And Defender Barricades

Last month, The Creative Assembly revealed its next game in the acclaimed Total War series, Attila. We've since seen screenshots of the game and glimpsed its campaign map, and a new trailer shows off some of the additions to city sieges.

The real-time battles are the series' calling card, and the attack and defense of settlements are a big part of that aspect of the games. The trailer, below, demonstrates new features such as dynamically spreading fire, different stages of destruction within the city, and defender barricades.

The buildings have long been able to catch fire during sieges in the Total War games, but it felt more like canned animations, which would end in the collapse of an individual building if it was hit and burned through. The Total War: Attila footage shows fires that burn across the whole city at once, making it look more like real destruction. The thick black smoke looks great, and it transitions into the other feature--the "multiple siege escalation states". This appears to mean varying levels of decimation the settlement can depict as the siege wears on, with burned out buildings and shells of structures littering the streets.

The last part of the trailer shows off the barricades, though it's not clear exactly how they'll work. Already in past titles, some unit types (usually ranged units) could lay down a protective barricade to stand behind, but this seems to imply the new barricades are specific to city defenders. They look a bit larger and more significant than the past barbed fences or stakes, so perhaps they'll take a bit of attacking to bring down.

Total War: Attila currently has no specific release date, planned only for release sometime in 2015 on PC.
