Music Player, Dashboard Redesign Join Themes And YouTube Support In Upcoming PS4 System Update 2.0

The PlayStation team has announced more details on the PS4's 2.0 system update, the software upgrade that will bring Share Play, UI enhancements, a music player, and more.

Razer Reportedly Valued At $1 Billion Following Rumored Round Of Funding With Intel

We had already heard that Share Play, YouTube support, and themes will be coming to PS4, but a new post on the PlayStation Blog has revealed an additional set of features in the 2.0 "Masamune" update. These include a way to finally organize your dashboard, broadcasting enhancements, and the ability to save PS Plus games without downloading them immediately.

Much-needed UI improvements will show just your 15 most used games or apps, with the rest placed in The Library. Improvements to The Library's sorting system will make finding anything relegated to that space much easier, as well: you can filter by type, name, recent use, and install date.

The USB Music Player will allow users to play their own music in the background of games or on the dashboard. Inserting a USB drive loaded with tunes will bring up the music player option, where you can choose to play any MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP files.

As we learned a while back, themes (available on Vita and PS3) will let PS4 owners select and apply a consistent design and style to their dashboard, but the new post explains that there will also be additional plain colors to choose from. You can replace the traditional light blue background and color scheme with gold, darker blue, red, green, purple, pink, or gray.

Upgrades to the console's broadcast offerings are mostly related to finding content you want to view. A new Featured channel will include official broadcasts from PlayStation, broadcasts from people on a players friend list, and any game channel that you've personally followed. The Live From PlayStation app will also support archived videos and allow you to search for specific game broadcasts.

The update is rounded out with additional voice commands, and a small feature that will suggest PSN accounts you may know in the What's New section. Unfortunately, there is still no announced release date for the 2.0 update--check back for official word from PlayStation.
