The Civilization series has a long history of opening games with epic and beautifully scored intro cinematics, and it looks like Beyond Earth is ready to continue that tradition. Though the game itself takes players to an alien planet filled with strange life, the video keeps the game grounded in humanity by introducing it from Earth's perspective. Players are able to see what they're leaving behind as they begin to plan out their journeys into the new world.

In Civilization: Beyond Earth, players land on an alien planet with the task of creating a new society. Players have the option of aligning with one of three Affinities, schools of thought for how humanity should proceed. Beyond providing bonuses, these Affinities are also tied into three out of the five possible victory conditions in the game.

Breaking Down Beyond Earth's Seeded Start: How Will You Start Your Game?

Purity players try to preserve the human race as it is by terraforming the new planet and bringing Earth-bound humans over to the new planet. Supremacy players shed their frail human forms and embrace technology as the one route toward survival on this new planet. Harmony players try to become more closely attuned to the alien planet, evolving to become more like the planet's native population and adapting to live in this strange environment.

Like any Civ game, players in Beyond Earth will produce science, build wonders and raise armies to become the ultimate presence on this new planet. Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth will be released for PC on October 24.
