To the excitement of his many admirers, famed artist Todd McFarlane was in attendance at the 2014 Comic Con in New York City on Oct. 10 to promote his latest line of strikingly realistic action figures; The Walking Dead Building Block Sets.
The McFarlane Toys owner took the time to talk about his company's Walking Dead toy rollout. In the process, he also touched on his artistic vision; speaking about his detailed approach towards the making of the various action figures of the hit zombie franchise.
McFarlane, who's also known for creating Spawn, admitted that the composition of the Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus on the TV show) figure was totally different from the rest of the set pieces.
"If I'm doing Daryl [Norman Reedus] on a bike, that may be a different mindset than trying to get a tower and the fence right," he explained
In terms of the fine details McFarlane Toys has put into its action figures and accessories, the artist explained that the added depth was the result of an opportunity he saw early on in the toy market.
"When I started this toy company, I saw they there was no art in the aisles," he said.
McFarlane was very adamant about his craft, even joking about being allowed to continue doing it on the basis that the sales keep coming in.
"As long as you guys are consuming, they let me do art," he said.
To what may come as a surprise to many, McFarlane is still considerably hands on when it comes to his involvement of his company's various toys.
"I can't paint all the pieces. I paint a lot of them at the factory, but I can't paint them all," he admitted
When queried on which character would prevail in a battle between Marvel's villain Venom and The Walking Dead group leader, Rick Grimes, McFarlane favored his sentient alien creation over Robert Kirkman's.
"I think Venom would kick his a-- because I created Venom. Robert Kirkman would tell you that Rick would kick Venom's a--," he stated with humility.
The Walking Dead series one product line will feature Daryl Dixon with a chopper, The Governor's room as well as a Prison tower with Gate. However, fans can add to their apocalyptic brick building with extra action figure and accessory packs.
The suggested retail price on the Blind Bag Figures will be $2.99, and are available for the following characters: Michonne and her Pet Walker, Carl Grimes, Riot Gear Walker, The Governor, Daryl Dixon and Herd Walkers.
The Walking Dead Building Block Sets will be exclusively available at Toys "R" Us stores both online and nationwide this fall. Please be sure to check out the Mcfarlane Toys website for all the latest information on the product.
