Borderlands creators Gearbox Software have released an 18-minute gameplay demo for the upcoming Battleborn, that showcases the game's co-op campaign and all of the snappy writing and memorable characters that fans have come to expect from the studio.

The video takes a five-player Battleborn team through a level in the co-op campaign. It not only gives viewers a chance to check out what gameplay as a whole is like, but it also gives an idea of how a handful of different characters handle. Characters are grouped by both class and faction, but even characters from the same class can play completely differently. Oscar Mike's rifle combat and Rath's melee swords play nothing alike, though both are classified as Assault characters.
The demo shepherds the team through a couple of different types of missions. The first mission has the team clear a room of enemy drones, and a subsequent one has them defend a point from several waves of enemies. Finally, the demo ends in a boss battle where every Battleborn hammers on a central enemy while dealing with the drones it continuously spits out.

The gameplay looks to be an amalgam of several different genres. The focus on heroes with different classes is certainly reminiscent of MOBA gameplay, but the objective-based campaign mode feels like a regular action game. The perspective is mostly first-person, but the camera will shift to a third-person view when the character is travelling long distances via a jump pad or ability.
Leveling up in Battleborn always presents the player with a choice between two upgrades. Once one is chosen, the other becomes locked for good. Presumably, these two lines of upgrades represent two different ways of playing the character, but each player should be able to mix and match upgrades from both lines to create his own unique brand of that character.
Battleborn will be hitting the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2015.
