Today's the day. The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus officially release to the public today. And what better way to celebrate than by dropping a couple of new phones on a stone walkway to see what happens?
Evolution Without Revolution: iPhone 6 Review Roundup
The YouTube channel PhoneBuff posted a video featuring an unofficial drop test for the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Though an amateur carrying a block of wood with bubble levels attached can hardly be considered a definitive test, the video still gives a general idea of just how durable these new smartphones are.
As it turns out, they're not very durable, no more so than any other phone would be, at least.
The iPhone 6 And iPhone 6 Plus Have Identical Specs For The Most Part
Each model of Apple's new smartphone line is put through three tests: a drop on its back, a drop on its edge and, the ultimate test, a drop right on its face. Both phones survive the drop on the back looking no worse for wear, and the standard iPhone 6 even survives the edge drop fairly unscathed. The iPhone 6 Plus, however, landed pretty impressively right on its corner during the edge test. This did not bode well for the screen, which cracked across both the length and width of the phone.
The faceplant test didn't go well for either phone. Both phones screens cracked pretty thoroughly on the stone walkway. It's important to note that both phones still seemed to be in good working order after the tests, though you probably wouldn't want to be running your thumb over those screens.
Another interesting discovery of the test is that bad falls tend to make the screen bend out from the casing. This ends up happening to both phones and, as the narrator points out, messes up the slim design that formed one of Apple's selling points.
As an added bonus, viewers get to see the iPhone 6's slow-mo video function in action, as the drop tests were recorded using another iPhone 6.
