Apple is reportedly working with American Express to build a mobile payments system into the new iPhone 6, one that will allow iPhone owners to use their devices to pay for their coffee or diamonds or whatever else iPhone owners/American Express members buy.

The reports claim the system would let iPhone owners scan their phones, which would be linked up with their credit card information, instead of going through the process of taking your wallet out of your pocket or purse, opening it up, flipping through all those credit cards, pulling one out, handing it to the cashier, and so on.
Does the current payment system (either with plastic credit cards or old fashioned legal tender if you're so inclined) really need the Apple disruption? Some analysts don't think so.

"Scanning a phone is no better than swiping a credit card," writes Forbes' Steven Bertoni. "For the customer and retailer to make a switch, the new technology must be vastly better than the old ways."
Customers have been slow to embrace Google's mobile payment system, or the ones innovated by wireless carriers. Apple, though, could have the legacy of disruption needed.
Neither Apple nor American Express have commented on the supposedly new system, but we shouldn't really expect Cupertino to talk about anything related to the new iPhone before they show us everything next week.
