Xbox One SmartGlass Update: Major Nelson Announces TV Streaming And Game DVR Features

SmartGlass Update Includes Game DVR and Threaded Messaging

Microsoft's Xbox One SmartGlass app received an update today, bringing live TV streaming and threaded messaging to the Xbox companion app. A tweet from Microsoft's Larry Hryb noted that the update was available right now for iOS and Windows Phone users, with no specifics on when the Android version was being updated.

According to Hryb, the update includes threaded messaging and a game DVR record button.

Last week, Microsoft announced the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner will launch in October, bringing high quality live television features to your Xbox One experience. The accessory is being tested in a pilot program in Europe (specifically the U.K., France, Italy and Spain). For users in those countries, the SmartGlass update will allow them to stream live TV through their smartphone or tablet. Users will also be able to play, pause and flip through channels, all without interrupting their Xbox One gameplay.

While the Stream TV to SmartGlass feature is only available now in Europe, it's expected to come across the Atlantic when the Xbox One Digital TV Tuner comes out later this fall.

The SmartGlass update also features new options for gameplay recording. The app includes a Game DVR record button, so users can record from their iPhone or tablet. The app also improves SmartGlass' social element, allowing users to post and share status updates on their activity feed.
