LG OLED 4K Ultra HD Televisions Released

LG's New OLED Ultra HD TVs Cost Over $10,000

Yesterday, LG unveiled two OLED television sets, evidence that the South Korean company is betting big on the more expensive, ultra-high definition screen option.

The 65-inch screen OLED TV will be hitting store shelves in South Korea, Europe and North America next month, with a 77-inch screen version coming out later this year, according to the company.

OLED screens provide among the best picture quality on the market. Other television manufacturers pushing ultra-high definition on consumers use cheaper LCD screens. The picture quality is known as 4K, meaning it has four times as many pixels as a standard high definition television.

OLED is even better than the available LCD, with deeper color saturation and sharper image quality.

These TVs will set you back, though. The 65-inch set available in September will cost over $11,000 here in the U.S. An ultra-high definition LCD set from most companies will cost about $3,000.

However, LG believes steps in technology will take the price of OLED screens down, and it wants to be there when it happens. For now, the company's stance is the following:

"OLED is where we must head next after PDP and LCD. It is a matter of time," Ha Hyun-hwoi, LG's TV business division president, said to reporters.

Samsung also uses OLED screens, but in smaller devices like smartphones and tablets.
