Sony Xperia M2 Aqua Is Waterproof Up To 1 Meter [VIDEO]

The Xperia M2 Aqua Can Survive While Fully Submersed

The Xperia M2 Aqua, Sony's latest smartphone, dares you to use it in the rain, or take it for a swim, or capsize a canoe while you're tweeting. The phone earns the highest water and dust resistance IP rating possible for a smartphone, IP68.

Sony has boasted about water-resistance for its line of phones, but the M2 Aqua takes it to the next level. The smartphone completely shuts out dust, and it can keep out water indefinitely while submersed up to one meter.

Usually, that means it survives to about three meters, but an Xperia Z2 with an IP58 rating recently survived after a harrowing ordeal at the bottom of the ocean. A Swedish man dropped his device into the sea, a fear many people have while snapping photos near the railing of a boat. A diver found the device a full month and a half later. It still worked even though it was at least 10 meters underwater for all that time-although the weathering effects of the sand, waves and rocks had left their mark.

Besides its swimming abilities, the M2 Aqua is pretty much the same as the regular M2, with a 4.8" screen, 8GB of storage, a hefty 2,300mAh battery and an 8MP/1020 camera. The M2 Aqua includes Android 4.4 KitKat with its launch. The device will be available to consumers this fall.

Sony released a video detailing the waterproof capabilities of the device.
