It has already been 6 years (!) since Wizards of the Coast released their 4th edition of the world's foremost tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Today sees the release of D&D Next's (or the 5th edition, for those keeping score) Player's Handbook, that eternal D&D book-set stalwart.
Tabletop Games Made Near A Billion Dollars Last Year
For decades now, the Player's Handbook has been the core foundation of the D&D experience, along with the Dungeon Master's Guide and the Monster Manual. D&D Next's PHB is launching today at your finest brick 'n mortar gaming shops, or at the Wizards of the Coast website for the price of $49.95 or C$57.00. That's pretty much what new hardcover D&D books go for, should you not be familiar with the game (yet).
If that's still too big an investment, Wizards has you covered with D&D Basic, a free (legally so!) PDF with the core rules of the game but only a limited number of races and classes to play. If you're ready to take the next step, you can do so with the D&D Starter Set ($19.99), with two booklets containing a pre-written adventure and a rulebook covering characters from levels 1-5.
Zelda Monopoly Is Totally A Thing
But now here it is! The PHB! The full gamut of races, classes and character options formerly hidden behind a paywall. Play dragonborn, tieflings, gnomes, bards, warlocks... what will you make?
This is all making me to itch for some play quite badly - and I haven't even had time to go through the entire basic rules PDF yet!
