Ready At Dawn, the company developing The Order 1886 was on hand at Gamescom in Germany and brought along a new trailer showcasing some of the new steampunk-esque weapons and environments you'll find. And as a special treat, as if feeling the zeitgeist spearheaded by The Oatmeal, they've introduced Nikola Tesla!
Tesla is one of history's most inventive and forward thinking minds, a genius of indisputable design. He was said to be engaged in a battle between himself and Thomas Edison, the latter winning and shaping the modern age. How things might have been different had Tesla emerged victorious? He was said to be building a free energy supplied and yes, even a death ray. That's right, Tesla was a mad scientist.

The titular Order in the game has recruited Tesla to build them futuristic weapons, such as the Thermite gun, to aid in the hunt against the forces of darkness. "He soon proves to be an invaluable asset and creates some of the most advanced weaponry known to man. But with great power comes great responsibility... and in the wrong hands, these weapons may prove to be as much a threat as an advantage."
It is somewhat fitting that Tesla should be cast in a game that involves stiff upper lipped Brits attempting to eliminate an entire race of creatures. For all the things the internet lionizes Tesla for, and they are many, the man was a noted eugenicist and advocated for the forced sterilization of criminals and the mentally ill. In modern terms, guess who he is probably talking about?

I do kind of wish the character was voiced by David Bowie, reprising his role as Tesla from the incredible 2006 picture The Prestige.
