Google's I/O developer conference is set to kick off soon, and should bring exciting news of a new Android version, smartwatches, tablets, and more.

While there's no guarantee as to what will be unveiled, a look at the next iteration of Android is highly likely. Additionally, smartwatches will feature prominently as Android Wear should be highlighted with a combination of Google's hardware and devices from other companies like Samsung and LG.

The conference begins at 12 p.m. ET, and you can watch it via the official Google live stream right here.

I/O is aimed at developers in theory, but fans and consumers will be just as interested in what the tech giant reveals and demonstrates, just as Apple enthusiasts tune in to WWDC. New hardware is probably the most exciting for consumers, since it's the final product that ultimately ends up in their hands, and there shouldn't be a shortage of it this year (unlike WWDC).

Nexus tablets and smartwatches will feature, though we shouldn't expect a new phone at this time. Given Google's penchant for exploring unexpected avenues, though, it's impossible to say what we won't see. Self-driving cars are the sort of thing the company is invested in, after all, but this conference should stay on the smaller scale. Expect Android to feature prominently as the software stays in focus while being buoyed by several devices running the OS.
