Marvel is looking to get into the magic business. After a tweet earlier this week from director Scott Derrickson who said that he would be directing the new Marvel property, Doctor Strange, it appears the studio is looking into casting and the names on there will make fans of all ages, races and genders go wild with anticipation.
The Stand Director Gets Excited About Upcoming Adaptation
Deadline reports that on the early wish list to play Earth's Sorcerer Supreme are Tom Hardy and, wait for it, Benedict Cumberbatch. Hardy of course played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and is currently working on the new Mad Max movie, while Cumberbatch, I think, needs no introduction. Suave, British, charming, a cunning lyricist, best known for his role in Star Trek Into Darkness and the BBC series Sherlock. Now, obviously this is just a wish list and like Christmas during your childhood, you never get everything you want, but when you shoot high enough, something might come down to earth. Deadline reports that other actors are in the mix, but come on, it's Bane or Sherlock we want to see.
Doctor Stephen Strange is the protector of Earth in the Marvel Universe, called the Sorcerer Supreme. He began as a cocky, overconfident neurosurgeon who, after suffering a career ending injury, becomes engaged in the mystical arts and from there learns his true destiny. In many ways, he's a less Objectivist version of Tony Stark, personality-wise, which is why I think Cumberbatch would be an excellent choice to don the blue suit and cape.
Sherlock Holmes Comes To The Unreal 3 Engine
Doctor Strange was name-dropped once to much applause in Captain America: The Winter Soldier earlier this year, which got fans all a tizzy. The film will fit alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and help bring in the even more mystical side plots and powers that are so present in the comics. Currently, Thor occupies the realm of "magic" in the films, but in actuality is only a more advanced society. Strange is just a straight up wizard, commanding all the arts both dark and light.
We'll have more as the news comes out. In the meantime, there's always Guardians of the Galaxy, coming out this August.
