We all knew that Watch Dogs would be huge for Ubisoft- it was one of only a handful of highly anticipated next-gen games, after all- but we had no idea it would be this big. Ubisoft has revealed sales data for the first week of sales, and it's one for the record books.
Watch Dogs: Grand Theft Auto With Hacking, Or Is It Something More? [REVIEW]
In one week Watch Dogs has sold through four million copies. Ubisoft announced the details on their blog and seemed genuinely ecstatic about the reception, pointing out that that not only is this the best-selling game in Ubisoft history but the single best-selling new IP at launch across the entire videogame industry.
“With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment” said Tony Key, Ubisoft’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We’re really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future.”
Assassin's Creed 4 Character Spotted In Great Watch Dogs Easter Egg
So there you have it- a sequel all but confirmed! Expect word on Watch Dogs 2 any day now.
Of course, will this momentum last? Response to the game has been positive but not ecstatic, and gamers are seemingly already getting tired of the game's repetitive missions. I know that I personally hit the wall last night while trying to finish some of the fixer missions and drinking games, and the lack of a true free-play co-op mode that lets you team up with a friend to complete missions is a real bummer.
But those of you playing the (very fun!) ctOS Mobile app are not alone- Ubisoft announced that more than one million people have downloaded the companion app and played against console gamers.
We're not done with Watch Dogs just yet, either- there are plenty of plans for DLC in the works. Maybe now there's the chance to really take the franchise to the next level and make it its own beast. More as we hear it!
