Director Gareth Edwards, whose Godzilla is currently tearing up the box office, has been tapped to direct the first of a series of one-off, Star Wars based standalone films set to be released on December 16, 2016. In what can only be described as a 'Geeky, Superhero Team-Up', writer Gary Whitta, who wrote 2010's The Book of Eli as well as three episodes for Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, including the season 2 opener.
Godzilla Roars Its Way To A Sequel
Excuse me while I geek the hell out about this. I found Godzilla to be somewhat lacking in the human department, the absolute lack of character development kinda sank the whole experiment, but I cannot deny Edwards his eye for visual splendor. Add Whitta, whose Telltale games are vastly superior to every other version of The Walking Dead, including the original, and you have the makings of something very special.
No word yet on which character the film is going to follow, though the rumor is that it will focus on Han Solo or Boba Fett (or perhaps even both). Whomever the film ends up being about, both Edwards and Whitta are like kids in a candy store:
"Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life - join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm." said Edwards, speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, echoing the statements of everyone who ever saw Star Wars.

Whitta added, "From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer," he told starwars.com, "It is deeply special to me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."
The only way I can see the news and rumors coming out of this film is if they reveal the plot to be centered around Jar Jar Binks. Even then, a horrid looking lizard that comes out of the water and destroys all that is good and holy in the universe? That could be right up Edwards' alley!
Hey, remember how amazing things looked in this trailer?
