Director Matthew Vaughn, who directed what was essentially Daniel Craig's audition reel for James Bond with Layer Cake, is returning to spy game. His new film was originally called simply The Secret Service but has been rebranded Kingsman: The Secret Service in what is potentially the foundation for a series of throwback British capers to satisfy the wait between Bond movies. The film is adapted from the Mark Millar (Kick-Ass, Wanted) and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) graphic novel and stars the ever-cool, wildly handsome and Oscar winner Colin Firth, in what will be his first action movie role.
Telltale Games Wants to Make James Bond Game
Co-starring alongside Mr. Darcy are espionage legends Michael Caine (who played Harry Palmer in a number of British adaptations of popular novels) and the one and only Samuel L. Jackson, who has been rocking an eyepatch as Nick Fury, director of S.H.I.E.L.D for several years now. Kingsman: The Secret Service will follow Firth's character, an old-school Sean Connery-esque super spy as he takes his young nephew (newcomer Taron Egerton) under his tutelage to train the boy in the fine art of spycraft.
"We missed all the spy movies we loved as kids, whether it was Bond or 'In Like Flint.' They had a sense of humor as well as being a thriller," said Vaughn speaking to EW. Vaughn's whose credits include the subversive Kick-Ass, possibly the best X-Men movie (until Friday possibly) in X-Men: First Class, as well as the wonderfully charming Stardust, seems like just the person to deliver us a cheeky old caper that is sure to be filled with plenty of espionage action.
