PlayStation has announced that the Beta of their new service, PlayStation Now, previously available only to PS3 owners, is now available on the PS4 beginning today, May 20th.
PlayStation Now Beta Runs Smooth
PlayStation Now is an open streaming service, much like Netflix, which allows you to stream a select number of PlayStation 3 games to any of your compatible devices, the PS3, PS4, your Vita and even select Bravia televisions. More compatible devices are expected as 2014 wears on. No disc, no download required, just pick up and play. Sony is also expanding the library of games to include several more triple A titles, such as Saints Row: The Third and a few of the more indie, experimental games, such as the stunningly great Catherine.
The Private Beta program has been a huge success for Sony and the PlayStation brand. Users have already logged over 50,000 hours of playtime since its inception in January. What with all the backwards compatibility issues that plagued the PS3 on its initial launch, that users will be more able to play the older catalogue of games on this current generation is a welcome sign from Sony.
PlayStation Now Rental Price Point?
PS4 owners who want to take part in the Beta should sign up sooner rather than later, as only a limited number of invites will be sent out to users. Sony is expanding the reach of the PS Now program, though it is still limited to certain parts of North America. If you're interested, make sure you sign up for a Sony Entertainment Network account (SEN). A DUAL-SHOCK 3 controller is also required for the service, but you should already have one of those. Sony will be updating the areas covered by the Now service as time passes, but if it's not available in your area, make sure you sign up anyway to ensure a better chance at making it into the program.
