Call of Duty and Battlefield are still going toe-to-toe, but the announcement of Advanced Warfare has helped publisher Activision pull ahead of EA, and the game's futuristic setting promises far flung toys that could help pull the CoD series into new territory. Now, developer Sledgehammer games has offered a few more details on how the game's new gear could change things, and how.
Making Sense of Myths, the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Edition
Sledgehammer's Senior Development Director Aaron Halon, and studio Co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield recently spoke with Game Informer, where they elaborated on the exo-suits specifically.
When Advanced Warfare's announcement trailer hit, gamers saw soldiers in these hi-tech getups, that, while bulky, allowed for some pretty far out there abilities, like making giant leaps, or tossing heavy object with ease, real "Six Million Dollar Man" type stuff. But what we saw in the trailer wasn't just for show, nor was it all that these suits could do.
We've since learned that players will be able to upgrade the suit thanks to experience earned during gameplay, from both multiplayer, and the game's solo campaign mode. Also, similar to the light bending choppers seen in the trailer, the suit will also give players the ability to stealth cloak, and even hover in mid-air.
But it's not just the equipment that will change CoD's definitely tried, but still true gameplay. Said Schofield, "We approached this like we would any new IP. I mean, this has been one heck of a creative challenge. I mean, everything is brand new in the game," which will feature "some pretty big experiments to the core mechanics that'll effect multiplayer and every mode of the game."
Schofield's statements echoed that of Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg, who said "we're shaking up the formula in several ways. New core gameplay mechanics with the exoskeleton suit...We're having a lot of fun making this game, and we think the world is going to have even more fun playing it."
When asked what the team would say to fans worried about a new team entering the yearly Call of Duty cycle, Halon concluded, "Don't worry about it. I mean, look, again, we're fans. We're really scrutinizing what we're doing ourselves and can't wait to show the stuff off."
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is set to launch worldwide on November 4 for PC, PS4, PS3, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
