We told you there was some big news coming from Bungie regarding Destiny today, and now we know what it is: gameplay footage of Devils' Lair, a strike mission on Earth.
Strike missions will be small co-op missions consisting of a three-player team. It'll be somewhat linear, and once you get to the end and fight the boss you'll be rewarded with a lot of gear.
There is some fighting against both of the enemy factions: the Hive and the Fallen. Both look pretty gnarly. If there's one thing that you can take away from this new gameplay, it's that the enemies will be anything but pushovers when you and your friends go on raids. Of course, the guys playing end up winning, but it definitely didn't look easy.
We also got a look at a few different weapons. First off, a pistol, which is a magnum-style firearm and seems to pack quite a punch. There is also a FAMAS-style assault rifle, a shotgun, and a sniper rifle shown off, so it seems that Bungie has all of its shooter bases covered. All of the characters seem to have special abilities and melee moves. Oh, and there are some sweet-looking throwing knives as well.
Perhaps the most important part of the entire trailer, however, is the last part. This Devils' Lair gameplay is what the Destiny team will be bringing to E3, and there are some hints that it will be one of the areas covered in the beta as well.
"Beneath the ruins of the Cosmodrome, in the shadow of an old colony ship, we've located the House of Devils' lair," the video's description states. "Fight the Fallen, burn back the Hive, and clear a path that leads straight into E3, Beta, and beyond."
At the end of the video they specifically reference that this demo will be coming to E3, but not whether it will be in the beta. But the description seems to suggest that Devils' Lair will be part of the beta.
IGN's Jose Otero, Kotaku's Patricia Hernandez, Polygon's Colin Campbell and GameSpot's Carolyn Petit all got a chance to play the Devils' Lair mission, and the results were mixed. Otero seemed to enjoy it. Campbell was very caught up in comparing it to Halo. Petit was intrigued, but ultimately felt like the small strike mission was too little to draw any sort of conclusion this early. And Hernandez didn't seem all that convinced that the game will be any good.
I'd definitely encourage you to read all four of the hands-on impressions and try to get an idea for yourself. The beta is scheduled to hit sometime this summer.
