The first hint of Mass Effect on next gen consoles has been spotted by a NeoGAF user via an online posting on Chilean retail site ZMart. It's not a listing for a new title, but an initial sighting of Mass Effect Trilogy for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Mass Effect Trilogy is already available on Xbox 360 and PS3, so the idea of all three games in one box is already a reality. A re-release on Sony and Microsoft's new hardware makes sense as the attractive and iconic game could benefit further from next gen graphical enhancements, and we've already heard from Bioware that it's being considered.
This is only an online posting from a single retailer, so it's possible ZMart is simply being presumptive and using a placeholder in the event that this title becomes official. There is no price or date listed with the posting right now, but my bet would be that they've heard or been told this title is in fact in the pipeline. With this knowledge, perhaps they felt okay posting the title with the intent to add the rest of the information at a later date. It is certainly possible this is simply a mistake or assumption, however so don't take this as official word.
It's not hard to imagine the existence of a next gen remake with improved framerate and resolutions, something we've seen with so many popular titles in the recent past. I think it's fair to say that the Mass Effect series helped define the last generation with its narrative choices, great graphics, and cinematic feel. The ending of the third title may have left a sour taste in the mouths of many, but the overall impact makes it a great candidate for a re-release on the new consoles.
The Last of Us Remastered, also one of the most iconic games of the last generation, was recently discovered in a similar online posting prior to its official announcement. My final judgment is that we should almost certainly expect to hear word from EA on Mass Effect Trilogy for PS4 and Xbox One at some point down the road.
