FromSoftware achieved a major milestone as Elden Ring just outsold the entire Dark Souls franchise prior to the former's release in 2022.
Elden Ring has just reached a new sales total of 28.6 million units, which is higher than the total sales of the entire Dark Souls franchise prior to the former's release in 2022. It is worth noting that in the two years since, the latter has sold even more units as well.
Elden Ring's Sales Performance
The sales boost for Elden Ring was supposedly a result of the release of its first and last expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. The development also comes as FromSoftware is preparing to put out a spin-off called Elden Ring Nightreign that focuses on co-op gameplay.

Publisher Bandai Namco was the one who announced that Elden Ring sold 28.6 million units worldwide, which is an increase of 3.6 million from the data revealed in June 2024. One user on X noted that the entire Dark Souls franchise was able to sell 27 million before Elden Ring came out, according to IGN.
FromSoftware originally released Elden Ring in February 2022, which means that the latest achievement was made in only two years and 10 months. On the other hand, the three Dark Souls games came out in 2011, 2014, and 2016, which spans a total of five years.
FromSoftware's Major Milestone
The developer was able to learn a lot of lessons from the Dark Souls franchise to make Elden Ring even more of a success. The latter was also FromSoftware's first attempt at making a game with an open-world system.
The sales performance of Elden Ring may have been a factor in why FromSoftware decided to work on a spin-off of the franchise. It acts as a sort of pseudo-sequel for fans who enjoyed their time in The Lands Between, Sports Illustrated said.
Elden Ring Nightreign tasks players with joining forces with other players to take on challenging bosses. Each character in the game embodies specific archetypes with unique powers that they need to use in order to survive three nights in the world.
While Elden Ring outsold the Dark Souls franchise prior to the former's 2022 release, the latter has now sold more than 37 million units. This means that The Lands Between still has a little bit of catching up to do if it wants to concurrently beat its predecessor in terms of sales alone, according to Game Spot.
