The Dawn of Equinox update for Sea of Stars completely overhauls and reworks the majority of the game's mechanics, particularly the combat.
The rework is now available for players on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and is meant to create a sort of definitive edition for Sea of Stars. The update overhauls the combat system, introduces couch co-op, and improves on various other aspects.
Dawn of Equinox Update
The combat system has two new major mechanics; Sticky Combo Points and Mystery Locks. The first means that all Combo Points that players store while fighting will be retained between battles.
This lets you use more combos and brings a whole new depth to strategy with regard to fighting enemies. The new feature also enables you to use more powerful attacks in trying to break locks on enemies.
The second major change comes with Mystery Locks that add a bit of difficulty to regular battles and boss fights. This new feature brings a new gameplay loop where you will have to reveal these locks to know how to break spell chants, according to Push Square.

The developer designed this change as a way to make the game a little bit harder to try and provide players with a definitive edition of Sea of Stars. Mystery Locks will appear on enemies that you encounter for the first time. They force you to try out different attacks to see what breaks their spell chants.
The Dawn of Equinox update also introduces couch co-op to Sea of Stars where up to three players will be able to adventure together. You can also use this feature online if you have a PlayStation Plus subscription and use the Share Play function.
An Overhauled Combat System
The three players will all be in control of their own character and can work together to take on the game's various challenges. This adds a new level of fun that many games in the past have benefitted from, PCGamesN said.
While playing in co-op, each player will still be able to move on their own and interact with whatever the world has to offer. The main difference this feature has is in terms of the game's combat.
You will engage in combat with an enemy when any player touches an enemy or projectile that they shot out. Players will take turns at random choosing the next action that they do using their very own character.
A major addition is Team Blocks and Team Hits which let you add on even more bonus effects. And if all three players perfectly time their block, the damage will be completely negated, according to the PlayStation Blog.
