The Rise of the Golden Idol is the sequel to the beloved murder mystery game and has officially received a Nov. 12, 2024, release date.

The sequel was first announced last year and now also has a demo that players can try out on PC via Steam. The Rise of the Golden Idol's story takes place in the 1970s. This marks a time jump of more than two centuries from the events in The Case of the Golden Idol.

The Rise of the Golden Idol Release Date

The upcoming title will follow a tenacious relic hunter who is on a quest to unearth the powerful artifact that can supposedly reshape the world. The official description says that players are observers who must investigate 20 strange cases of crime, death, and depravity.

The Rise of the Golden Idol will be available on consoles and PC and there is a mobile version that you can get if you have a Netflix subscription. Developer Color Gray Games also launched a "Redux" update for The Case of the Golden Idol, according to The Verge.

This adds various things such as a new user interface (UI) as well as a new hint system. This game is set to be verified on Steam Deck soon too to make it easier to play for a lot of players that own the device.

The announcement of the sequel's release date marks the return of the award-winning detective saga. The legend of the Golden Idol has all but faded following three centuries from the unspeakable fate of the Cloudsleys. It is now only carried through small whispers.

The Rise of the Golden Idol tasks players with making sense of a grand mystery that unravels across an age of hallucinogens, fax machines, parapsychology, and TV guides. The game features a variety of characters that have their own roles in the wider mysteries that unfold, Gematsu said.

But like before, many of these characters will have their own motives in the grand scheme of things. The game's description also notes that some will be carrying more than just simple agendas.

Continuing the Beloved Murder Mystery Saga

The Case of the Golden Idol was a relatively short game that lasted around six to eight hours depending on how fast you solve the mysteries. Each chapter depicts a different crime in progress.

Players will never really get to see the entire crime play out as you only see events immediately beforehand, during, or after. These are depicted in a brief repeating cutscene. During that animation, you will get all the clues you need to understand what happened.

You also have a notebook with a series of words that you can select to spell out what you think that was. The game's mysteries start out simple enough. However, they later become stranger and will build a connective narrative, according to Polygon.
