Star Trek Online developer Cryptic Studios is laying off an unspecified number of employees. This marks the second round of job cuts within a year.
The news was spread after several of the studio's members who were impacted by the redundancies discussed the layoffs on LinkedIn. It is currently unclear just how long ago the workers were informed of the situation or how many were affected.
Cryptic Studios' Latest Layoffs
The most recent developers to have been impacted by the layoffs said that they will be finishing their work on Oct. 31, 2024. Character artist Amelia March said that October is her last month at Cryptic Studios.
She added that she and many other talented people were laid off in the company's second round of job cuts within a year. March said that one of the biggest reasons she got into game development was to work alongside amazing and passionate people, according to Games Industry.
Another developer, Mauricio Tejerina, posted on the same day as March to talk about the layoffs. They said that they would be leaving the studio at the end of the month as well. They added that they were part of the job cuts that affected talented people who became family over the past decade.

Mauricio said that they were still hopeful that all of the workers affected by the layoffs would find new job opportunities. They added that they should be aware that it was not them who were responsible for the outcome.
The last time that Cryptic Studios laid off employees was in November last year amidst the Embracer Group implosion that saw the collapse of a $2 billion deal. The latter was with Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group, PCGamer said.
Unconfirmed Job Cuts
The first round of layoffs were rumored the month before they were actually implemented. It seems like this is also what is happening with the latest round of job cuts. Senior community manager Fatum suggested before that at least some of the cuts have been in the works for quite some time now.
The layoffs follow previously announced efforts to have Deca Games handle more of the development on Star Trek Online, Neverwinter, and Champions Online. A previous Cryptic Studios stream revealed plans for all three titles.
However, it also showed that they were in the process of transitioning Deca Games employees to "take over the creation of some of the content." It seems like the cost considerations are now showing their aftereffects for Cryptic Studios, according to MMORPG.
