The console developer for Minecraft and a YouTuber announced a collaborative effort to work on a new survival sandbox game, Reforj.
The new title is being developed by 4J Studios and Minecraft YouTuber Joseph Garrett. The two had previously worked together on several projects and appeared at Minecon. The content creator said that the work was not full time but it took up the majority of his workweek.
New Survival Sandbox Game
He said that the work averages to about three days a week, adding that it wasn't just him handing in something once a month. Garrett said that the collaboration has had him being incorporated as part of the team.
The founder and chairman of 4J Studios, Chris van der Kuyl, added that there have been many cases where big teams bring in consultants or creatives. However, that usually meant that they came in for a day and did not actually contribute to making a game, according to GamesIndustry.

The development comes as Garrett had already decided to end his Minecraft series "Stampy's Lovely World" when 4J Studios approached him. Kuyl said that the two parties would always get on well with each other.
This is why he and co-founder Paddy Burns talked to Garrett about the game that they were building. The two said that they loved the content creator's feedback and knew that he was very knowledgeable about sandbox games.
Garrett noted that because the new game is being made by 4J Studios, it is unavoidable that it would be similar to Minecraft. He emphasized that they were not working on making Minecraft 2 despite various articles talking about such an endeavor, VGChartz said.
A Different Gameplay Experience
Kuyl added that there has to be a frame of reference but reassured that they are trying to provide a different gameplay experience. The 4J Studios founder said they have no targets like a certain number of players by a certain date.
He added that they are looking to this generation of creatives, saying that Reforj will be the most creator-friendly game in the market. Kuyl hopes that they will take their game and show them journeys and stories that they didn't even think were possible.
The 4J Studios founder said that they already had their first group of YouTubers in the studio and will soon have a pre-alpha version available. The latest effort comes as the studio is known for working on HD remasters of Perfect Dark and Banjo-Kazooie, according to GameRanx.
