Unreal Engine 5 Pushes RTX 4080 to Its Limits for Native 4K Gaming

The NVIDIA RTX 4080 is one of the most high-end graphics cards today. However, even this extremely powerful GPU cannot provide smooth native 4K performances with several games that have been developed using Unreal Engine 5. A new comparison video from MxBenchmarkPC sheds light on some problems the RTX 4080 is facing in maintaining its framerates.

Unreal Engine 5 Performance Struggles

The video includes a number of games, from Nobody Wants to Die to Senua's Saga: Hellblade 2, Lords of the Fallen,The First Descendant, and Remnant 2. All of these games are barely able to run natively at 4K on the RTX 4080, frequently dipping below 30 FPS. It tops out at 60 FPS and beyond if using NVIDIA's DLSS. Even then, it doesn't always perform well.

Unreal Engine 5 Demanding Features

Unreal Engine 5 hits on very demanding features like Lumen and Nanite, which are also not utilized in all games that are tested. Despite that, the RTX 4080 crawls, suggesting the high demands this engine puts on hardware. Epic Games has designed Unreal Engine 5 with upscaled elements in mind, making it hard for hardware like the powerful RTX 4080 to run games smoothly even at native 4K. The recent release, Unreal Engine 5.4, only serves to push the bar higher against the current technology.
