Hollow Cocoon is a first-person Japanese horror adventure game that is set in 1980s Japan and will be coming to Nintendo Switch later this July.

The game puts players in control of Minato Jinba, a college student who is returning to his mother's hometown after receiving news that his grandmother is in critical condition. You will have to hide yourself from the monster and gather crucial evidence.

Your main objective is to unravel the bone-chilling truth that is hidden beneath the surface of Hollow Cocoon. Before traveling to his mother's hometown, the protagonist was living away from his parents in a boarding house in the city.

The mother's hometown is Ichinose, which is a village that is located deep within the mountains and was the place where the character's mother was born. Minato has not seen his grandmother for more than a decade and he has a deep resentment towards her, according to Gematsu.

This is partly due to her refusing to even attend her own daughter's funeral when she died, which further intensified her grandson's disdain. As the bus that Minato is riding rumbles across the country road, he recalls his only conversation with his grandmother.

This was when she said, "The thing with silkworms, you know; even if they could leave their cocoons, they have no mouths to eat, and their wings do not fly. They simply lay their eggs and perish. People are the reason they suffer this fate."

Then, you see that the sky reddens in the twilight and the mountains cast an ominous shadow in the background. Minato later finds himself in this house where he is put in a terrifying situation after discovering a shocking truth.

Hollow Cocoon was released for PC via Steam last December and was self-published by developer Nayuta Studio. This horror adventure game's screenshots perfectly capture an ominous feeling that almost lulls you into a false sense of security, said Digitally Downloaded.

An Ominous Japanese Horror Adventure

The game features a captivating story that has a branching narrative with four distinct endings for players to discover and experience. Your choices while controlling Minato will be what determines which path he takes moving forward.

The Japanese horror title has both auto and manual save options that allow you to immediately return to your last checkpoint if you fail. It also features three difficulty options; the first for focusing on the story, the second for normal difficulty, and the last for a challenging experience.

Be wary though, as you are not able to raise the difficulty once you get started on the game itself but you will at least be able to lower it if you are having too much trouble. Another feature is the inclusion of settings that will help reduce motion sickness.

Hollow Cocoon's visuals are surprisingly sharp, particularly for an indie title, and the local environment is full of little details that are reminiscent of past eras. These include the shopping program on TV, the old-fashioned Japanese keys, and other vintage toys and items, according to VGChartz.
