Impact on Development

Following Baldur's Gate 3's resounding critical acclaim, developers at Larian Studios found themselves grappling with unforeseen challenges. Swen Vincke, CEO and director at Larian, revealed to Edge magazine that the game's extensive recognition was becoming a double-edged sword. The constant need to attend award ceremonies was significantly disrupting their development schedule. "It affects development - there's a lot of them," Vincke acknowledged, noting the strain caused by frequent interruptions.

To manage this, Larian adopted a strategy of rotating teams attending various award shows. Vincke expressed gratitude for the recognition but admitted that the prolonged celebratory phase was unexpectedly draining. "It would be cool if everybody could agree to do it all at the same time," he mused, highlighting the emotional toll it has taken on the team.

Looking Ahead

Despite the challenges, Vincke remains optimistic about the future. He emphasized a desire to shift focus towards new projects, including two upcoming RPGs. However, the lingering attention on Baldur's Gate 3 continues to delay closure for the team. "We've all been more emotional because we can't get closure," Vincke lamented, reflecting on the prolonged post-release phase of the game.

As the game approaches its first anniversary since release, the accolades continue to pour in, underscoring its enduring impact. The team gathers once more, reminiscent of their initial discussions two years ago, pondering the next steps amidst ongoing celebrations.
