Ubisoft's 20th Anniversary Edition of Beyond Good and Evil Draws Criticism from Fans

Last month, Ubisoft removed the original Beyond Good & Evil game from Steam, sparking rumors of a remaster. Shortly after, they launched the Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition, celebrating the classic 2003 title with enhanced features like 4K 60 FPS support, improved graphics, audio updates, and new content.

Controversy Over Requirements and Features

The Beyond Good & Evil - 20th Anniversary Edition is available for purchase on Steam, the PlayStation Store, and the Microsoft Store at £17.99 GBP / $19.99 USD / $26.99 CDN. A physical release is slated for July 12. However, the Steam version has stirred controversy due to its stringent requirements, drawing criticism from fans.

Unlike the original 2003 release, the anniversary edition imposes several new conditions. It includes Denuvo DRM, an anti-piracy measure known for potentially impacting game performance. Additionally, players must link their Ubisoft account to their Steam account and have Ubisoft's launcher installed to access the game.

Disappointment Over Added Requirements and Increased Price

Fans have expressed disappointment over these additional requirements and the increased price, especially since the original version was removed from sale. Many noted that advertised features like updated achievements are not available on Steam, but only through Ubisoft Connect.

The community response on social media platforms has been intense, with over 4,700 upvotes as of this writing on related discussions. Critics advise boycotting the purchase of the 20th Anniversary Edition to protest against Ubisoft's consumer practices. Some users suggest buying the original game on platforms like GoG, which offers the game without additional requirements or DRM.

In response to the controversy, one user advised, "Avoid purchasing it altogether; that's the best solution." Another echoed similar sentiments, suggesting consumers refrain from supporting Ubisoft's policies.
