Like a Dragon Dev RGG Studio Teases New Installment in the Franchise

The developer behind Yakuza: Like a Dragon, RGG Studio, teased new information regarding the latest installment in the franchise that it said would come as a surprise for fans of the series.

The reveal was made to fans who were attending an Anime Expo panel that was posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. They reported that the developer said, "We can't tell you what kind of game it is but I will tell you... you will be surprised."

Due to the part of the statement that refers to what "kind of game it is," many people have speculated that the team is looking to adjust the gameplay of the franchise once more. Another possibility is that the developers could introduce a new playable character.

The last time that RGG Studio did something like this was with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, where Ichiban Kasuga was made the protagonist and the game featured a combat system that was turn-based, according to PushSquare.

For now, what is known is that the next game that RGG Studio will put out is not going to be Yakuza Kiwami 3. Despite this, a Yakuza 3 game would still most likely happen at some point in the future. Furthermore, a recent rumor suggests that Sega wants the franchise to be as early as possible.

The rumors come as the latest entry in the Like a Dragon franchise is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, which was released earlier this year to critical acclaim. While the series featured previously action games, it has since transitioned to something similar to turn-based RPGs.

This also comes as there is a live-action adaptation of the series that is in development and will consist of six episodes. The first three are scheduled to be released on Oct. 25, 2024, and the final three will be coming out on Nov. 1, 2024.

The show is produced in Japan and will be available to watch in its original Japanese language with subtitles or a dubbed voiceover. The story of the series will take place over two time periods; 1995 and 2005, said the Video Game Chronicle.

Live-Action Series

The live-action show will follow "the life, childhood friends, and the repercussions of the decisions of a fearsome and peerless Yakuza warrior with a strong sense of justice, duty, and humanity."

The series, which is billed as a six-part crime-suspense-action series, is being directed by Take Masahru and Takimoto Kengo. It stars Takeuchi Ryoma, who also appeared in multiple Kamer Rider titles, as the lead character.

The show's screenplay and story will be handled by Sean Crouch and Yugo Nakamura and the Japanese screenplay will be led by Yoshida Yasuhiro and Yamada Kana. The series builds up on the popularity of the series that was originally released by Sega in 2005.

It was positioned as an entertaining game for adults and was able to get a massive fan base among its target audience. The upcoming series depicts the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and people who are living in a huge entertainment district, Kamurocho, according to Variety.
