Sony is Coming Back to Tokyo Game Show After 5 Years

Sony Interactive Entertainment, the makers of the PlayStation console, is coming back to the Tokyo Game Show this year and will be a general exhibitor for the first time in five years.

The confirmation that the studio will be present during the event later this year came alongside the launch of the Tokyo Game Show 2024 visitor's site on July 4, 2024. The development comes as Sony has not had a major presence at the event since 2019.

In a statement that the Tokyo Game Show social media account shared, it noted that the event will be held on the largest-ever scale. It also revealed that it would host a total of 3,190 exhibition boots, which exceeds the record that was set last year.

But exactly what Sony will be exhibiting during the show this year, which runs from Sept. 26, 2024, to Sept. 29, 2024, is still a mystery. It would also be during a time when Astro Bot, one of PlayStation 5's biggest upcoming releases, would have already launched, according to Eurogamer.

There are also many other Sony releases that are expected for this year, including the studio's 5v5 sci-fi shooter Concord and God of War: Ragnarok on PC. The former is scheduled to launch on Aug. 23, 2024, for PC and PlayStation 5. On the other hand, the latter will make its debut on PC on Sept. 19, 2024.

One thing that many fans are speculating could be exhibited at the Tokyo Game Show is more details about Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

The first proper look at the game was shared in January earlier this year during a State of Play. The sequel to the critically acclaimed Death Stranding game is slated for a 2025 release.

The latest development also marks the end of Sony's abrupt end of not attending the major gaming event that takes place every year in Japan. The studio has also taken a step back from other industry trade shows for the last few years.

Upcoming Major Titles

Instead, Sony has decided to focus on providing players with updates to its release calendar and games with PlayStation State of Plays. The revelation that the studio will be attending this year's Tokyo Game Show also showed other companies joining, such as Capcom and Square Enix, said ComicBook.

In order for PlayStation to take full advantage of attending the event and getting platinum sponsorship, it needs to showcase something exciting to get fans hyped up. But as the studio currently has a relatively thin release list confirmed, it is a wonder what it could actually show up with.

The current estimate for how many people will be attending the Tokyo Game Show this year is around 250,000. The news that Sony will be attending also comes after the studio confirmed that it would not be attending Gamescom 2024.

The company also recently noted that it expects PlayStation 5 hardware sales to decline during its current year, which runs to March 2025. It also said that it would not be releasing any "major existing franchise titles," according to the Video Game Chronicle.
