Nintendo Switch Online Expands NES Library With 7 New Games!

The Nintendo Switch Online's NES catalog has been expanded with seven new games, including the original Golf title.

Other titles included in the latest wave of games coming to the list are Donkey Kong Jr. Math, Urban Champion, Mach Rider, and others. The Urban Champion game was first released in 1976 and is considered another NES classic as it was the first 2D fighter from Nintendo.

On the other hand, Golf offers a range of courses that many players will be familiar with if they played the Wii Sports version several years ago. What makes the new additions worth it is that they will all be available to play as long as you have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

The service has a basic tier subscription that costs $4 per month or $20 per year and lets you access the ever-expanding catalog of classic games that Nintendo has on offer, according to Eurogamer.

The NES collection has been on the Nintendo Switch Online since the launch of the service in September 2018. It was only natural for the Japanese video game company to have reached into some of the more obscure titles in the platform's history.

Probably the most retro game included in the latest addition of titles is The Mystery of Atlantis, which was released in 1986. This is a side-scrolling platformer and maze exploration game that was made by Sunsoft.

Its makers consider it a Mario Bros.-beater and what's more, the game was never released outside of Japan, making it quite a collectible. Golf, while being the most popular among the latest games added to the NES collection, was first released in 1990.

The game was programmed by the one and only Satoru Iwata, who later became the company's president and has become a beloved figure both within and outside Nintendo and among its fans, said Polygon.

Adding Classic Games

There was also a playable version of the game that was originally hidden in the source code of the Switch operating system as a tribute to Iwata, who died in 2015. However, this was relatively tricky to access even before it was removed in 2017.

On top of letting you access classic NES games, even the basic tier of the Nintendo Switch Online allows you to play SNES and GameBoy titles. For those who want to get their hands on games on Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and GameBoy Advance, they will have to get the Expansion Pack Tier.

In one of the recently added games, Donkey Kong Jr. Math, players are taken to the vine-swinging gameplay of the original and introduced with an extra element of mathematical challenge.

You can control Donkey Kong Jr. and go on a journey to rescue Donkey Kong, who was imprisoned by none other than Mario. Another title, Solar Jetman, lets players go on a dangerous journey to collect the lost pieces of the Golden Warship.

This is a near-mythical vessel that was said to be capable of interstellar travel. The game is an early-'90s multidirectional shooter that features 12 menacing alien worlds. Each of these has its own level of gravity, according to NintendoLife.
