Cyberpunk 2077 Sequel: CD Projekt Red's North American Studios are in Charge of Development

CD Projekt Red gave an update about work on the sequel for Cyberpunk 2077, noting that its North American arm, which includes studios in Boston and Vancouver, will be in charge of development.

The announcement was made by acting executive producer Dan Hernberg during the latest episode of the studio's AnsweRED podcast. He said that it was appropriate to have the popular game's sequel be developed in North America.

Hernberg added that he thinks Cyberpunk is "obviously a uniquely American story," adding that the game has a lot of punk energy. He also noted that Cyberpunk 2077 was written by an American person.

On the other hand, associate game director Pawel Sasko gave an example of a particular situation where Cyberpunk 2077 did not feel American enough.

He said that the first game's manhole covers looked more like the ones that are used in parts of Europe instead of in the U.S. where it was set, according to the Video Game Chronicle.

He also talked about some players talking on social media platforms about what they called an "immersion-breaking bug" in Cyberpunk 2077. This was where they talked more in detail about the manhole covers in the game.

Hernberg added that curbs in Europe were different as well as the color of the signs, which results in everything being slightly off. While he said that this doesn't necessarily break immersion, it gets noticed every now and again by some players.

The studio also announced earlier this year that it appointed a number of veteran developers to work on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. These include Hernberg, who previously held the position of head of production at both Amazon Games and Panic Button as well as lead product manager at Blizzard.

One of the advantages of the sequel being made by the Boston studio is that CD Projekt Red will be able to utilize its North American talent pool. These include graduates from high-profile universities such as Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said WCCFTech.

Bringing a More American Approach

Additionally, the studio is collaborating with the existing Vancouver studio and Hernberg teased that the Canadian team is working on some "really cool stuff" for the upcoming title. The sequel for Cyberpunk 2077 will most likely take some time to actually release.

Despite that, CD Projekt Red built the new studio especially to work on the new game in parallel with the new The Witcher saga. The developer is now planning to speed up the rate of its game releases, which is something that fans will most likely enjoy.

The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is codenamed Project Orion and is currently known to be in the early stages of video game development. The people who are working on it include those who had a hand in the original game and its spy-thriller Phantom Liberty expansion.

These include game director Gabriel Amatangelo, creative director Igor Sarzynski, cinematic director Andrzej Stopa, environment art director Kacper Niepokolczycki, acting lead quest designer Sarah Grummer, and engineering director Kacper Koscienski, according to the CD Projekt Red Press Center.
