Background and On Demand Recording
Valve has introduced two distinct recording modes in the new Steam Beta. The Background Recording mode continuously saves gameplay to a preferred drive, allowing users to set duration and storage limits. On Demand Recording mode lets users start and stop recording whenever they choose.
The new timeline feature and player-added event markers make it easier to find key moments. Achievements, screenshots, and events within supported games can automatically create markers as well. Additionally, there's a redesigned Recordings & Screenshots interface for editing and sharing footage.
Users can now post videos directly into a chat session with a friend or to a broader audience with a single click. Valve ensures recordings can be transferred to another device, such as from Steam Deck to PC. You can share temporary links to MP4s using either the Steam Mobile App or a QR code.
Replay Mode and Accessibility
The new Replay mode is accessible from the Steam Overlay in every game, allowing users to quickly jump back through their recent gameplay. This feature is particularly useful for seeing what went wrong when a character dies or recalling something mentioned by an NPC earlier.
The new Steam Beta is currently available for all users. Developers can also access a new SDK and API. To explore these features, Steam users should go to Settings > Interface > Beta Participation and select a Beta option. Users can activate Background or On-Demand recording through Settings > Game Recording.
Valve intends to launch these features for all users once any beta-related issues are resolved.
