Street Fighter Movie Reboot Gets Official Release Date Despite Setback

Street Fighter Movie Reboot Gets Official Release Date Despite Setback

The Street Fighter movie reboot just got an official release date despite facing a setback when its directors, Danny and Michael Philippou, separated from the project over production plans.

Universal brought Capcom's fighting game franchise to the big screen three decades ago with a film that starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, Kylie Minogue, and the late Raul, Julia. In 2009, 20th Century Fox rebooted the franchise with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

But now, Legendary and Sony Pictures are allegedly releasing the new movie on Mar. 20, 2026, which is considered a very confident move by the companies. This is considering the setback with the Philippou brothers that happened more than a week ago.

The two reportedly parted ways with the project because the studios wanted production to start as early as possible to capitalize on the popularity of live-action adaptations. However, the Philippou brothers were already tied down with a horror film lined up as their next project, according to GameSpot.

Capcom's Street Fighter franchise made its arcade debut in 1987 and introduced players to series mainstays Ryu and Ken. But it was only in 1991 with the release of Street Fighter II that the franchise actually became a global phenomenon.

The sequel introduced several new characters, including Chun-Li, Guile, and many more that have since become fan favorites. Since then, Capcom has released several games in the franchise and the most recent is Street Fighter 6.

Other than the first two live-action adaptations of the series, there have been many animated films, an anime TV series, and an American cartoon based on the games. So far, it is unknown whether Sony and Legendary's upcoming Street Fighter movie will be based on the earlier games or the more recent titles.

Legendary acquired the film and television rights to the Street Fighter series in 2023 and is working with Capcom to bring the live-action film to life. The success of the series is seen with its selling of 49 million units globally to date, said TheNews.

The Street Fighter Franchise

The first two attempts at bringing a movie out of the Street Fighter games both failed critically and commercially. The latest opportunity comes as live-action adaptations have generated more hype with the success of The Last of Us and Fallout.

The update regarding the Street Fighter movie comes as the latest game in the franchise, Street Fighter 6, is generating hype with its new update that introduces the classic antagonistic character M. Bison in all his former glory.

Players who own the Year 2 Character Pass or bought the DLC separately from the in-game Goods Shop can play M. Bison now. In the latest update, Capcom also introduced bug fixes and other adjustments.

M. Bison can be used in multiplayer, can be met in World Tour, and even taken through the arcade story mode. He comes with an extra costume and several color variants and there are other goodies as well, such as stickers and titles.

On top of the classic character, the new update includes changes to the visibility of the Drive and Vitality gauges, and tutorials, and also lets players preview items in the Goods Shop without having to buy them first, according to Siliconera.
