Sony Announces End of Rewards Program: Spend Your Points Now!

Sony just announced that it would be shutting down its Rewards Program, which is not to be confused with the PlayStation Stars Program, by the end of 2024.

The latest announcement forces players to spend all of their points and redeem any leftovers before the deadline or they will be lost forever. The Sony Rewards website and mobile application will shut down on Dec. 31, 2024, as revealed by the updated FAQ page.

That is the deadline for players to redeem any points and access their account or submit any bonus points and purchase credit request forms through the app. But after July 21, 2024, you will no longer be able to mail in physical bonus points or purchase credit request forms.

The Sony Rewards program involves the use of the Sony and PlayStation Visa credit cards in order to collect points. These can then be used to redeem a variety of items, such as electronics, gift cards, and PSN Store codes, according to GameSpot.

In 2017, the PlayStation Credit card was first introduced and last year, Microsoft also introduced the Xbox credit card with Mastercard. The latter had recently become available for everyone outside of Xbox's insider program.

It offers players things such as Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions for spending a certain amount of money within the first 12 months of the account being opened. The decision to close the Rewards Program comes despite it being a favorite among players.

Sony communicated the closure of the Rewards Program via the official website and the company stressed the importance of recovering unused digital codes and accessing your accounts to avoid losing earned benefits.

Current cardholders will be contacted by Comenity Bank about the changes with the end of Sony's Rewards Program. Even after the program shuts down, the credit cards will continue to function normally until their expiration dates, said FandomWire.

The latest announcement also comes shortly after the studio offered players 12 free months of PS Plus Premium with the PlayStation Visa card. This particular promotion is set to end in September 2024.

Providing Various Benefits

Sony's Reward Programs contributed greatly to the loyalty of many customers due to the flexibility and advantages that it offered. However, its closure can also be viewed as providing an opportunity to make way for new strategies that can be more in line with consumers' needs.

With how the company is focusing on ensuring a well-organized conclusion to its Rewards Program, many consumers anticipate how it could remain competitive in the market. This is particularly true due to the recent success of a former Xbox exclusive dominating the PlayStation charts.

The Rewards Program allowed players who bought items from the Sony store to earn points at the rate of $1 for every point, which in turn, would be worth roughly one cent. Earning points can still be done up until the program itself is closed down at the end of the year.

The situation also comes as earlier in June, a Genshin Impact-themed PlayStation 5 console bundle was revealed for future sale in Japan. On the other hand, a new Astro Bot game was unveiled in May 2024's State of Play. These are only some of the recent developments for Sony this year, according to Siliconera.
