Ark of Charon Showcases Mix of Tower Defense, City Building With Steam Demo

Ark of Charon just released a demo on Steam for players to try out this unique blend of tower defense and city building that lets players build their cities on the back of a giant, walking tree.

This new game is somewhat similar to The Wandering Village, a highly popular city-building game that is out on Steam right now and was first released in 2022. In Ark of Charon, your city is on the back of a moving creature.

You will need to use adorable little golems in order to tend to the tree by gathering resources and building up defenses. While the game may seem like a casual game with its relaxing music and cute aesthetic, it is anything but.

The moving base is frequently besieged by monsters that will constantly attack you, sometimes in much larger numbers than you could have anticipated. These enemies are able to destroy your defenses, kill your golems, and wreck your tree core, which will result in a game over, according to PCGamesN.

What you can do, however, is build a little house for your golems on the stone back of the giant creature that moves the world tree. Additionally, you can add more ballistae on its roof to fight off against the continuous onslaught of enemies.

The reason behind the game forcing you to move around so much despite it being a dangerous endeavor is that there is a continuously spreading dark storm. If your golems get caught up in it, they will gradually lose health until they die, which forces you to always be on the move.

On top of this, you will eventually run out of resources in the area, which means that you have to open up the world map and find new regions to build up your supplies. The official release of Ark of Charon is set for July 9, 2024, but the demo is available right now on Steam for free.

A Mix of Tower Defense and City Building

When gathering resources, you can collect more than just what you need to build structures but also things that will satisfy your golems' hunger. There is also "lost technology" that was left behind by the previous inhabitants of the world that you can uncover, said Gematsu.

There are a variety of infrastructures that you can build in Ark of Charon, including walls to protect the core, weapons to defeat enemies, and rooms for your golems to work in.

In order to make your journey easier, you will have to effectively manage your time, resources, the stamina of your golems, and the weight and strength of buildings.

You can also get early access to Ark of Charon at a discounted price before the game is fully released on Steam. The early access versions include upgraded technology and powerful enemies beyond what you can see in the demo.

Other than Ark of Charon, there are plenty of other city builders who currently have a demo out now for players to try out. These include titles such as Citadelum, Airborne Empire, Beyond These Stars, Kaiserpunk, Goblin Camp, and more, according to PCGamer.
