New Assassin's Creed Shadows Trailer Shows Vastly Different Gameplay of Dual Protagonists

Fans of the Assassin's Creed franchise have been treated to another trailer that showcases Assassin's Creed Shadows' gameplay and the vastly different mechanics of the game's dual protagonists.

The gameplay footage was showcased during Ubisoft Forward and followed several story trailers that fans have seen since earlier this year. The new video gave fans of the franchise a deeper look into the world itself which is set in feudal Japan.

The two protagonists of Assassin's Creed Shadows are Naoe, a shinobi, and Yasuke, a samurai. The two characters feature differing styles, with the former focusing on classic stealth while the latter on more direct combat.

Through the game, you will be able to switch between Naoe and Yasuke at any point that you want to. However, Ubisoft also noted that while in the middle of missions, you will not be able to switch characters.

The recently released gameplay trailer also showed how killing the same assassination target can be approached from entirely different ways between the two. Each character offers a unique style of play as Yasuke is a hulking warrior and Naoe is a stealthy ninja, according to Kotaku.

The start of the gameplay trailer showed Yasuke wandering the countryside and arriving at a village. The inhabitants immediately take notice of the samurai due to his status as well as his massive figure, not to mention the fact that he has black skin.

The inclusion of the character in the game comes as Yasuke is a historical figure and is the first that Ubisoft has made a main protagonist throughout the franchise's nearly two-decade run.

As the samurai walks by, NPCs bow, which serves as an interesting twist on how previous games in the series have typically forced you into the seedier corners of society.

The samurai's combat style feels similar to RPG-heavy entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise, such as Odyssey and Valhalla. The character enters combat with skills that are available on the right trigger in tandem with face buttons.

Vastly Different Combat Styles

After an introductory combat encounter with Yasuke, the game shifts to show Naoe bursting onto the scene to help the samurai by leaping onto an enemy and executing them. The two protagonists have some sort of alliance in trying to assassinate the daimyo at Fukuchiyama Castle, said IGN.

When you take control of Naoe, you will be able to scale walls, hide in foliage, and take advantage of stealth to kill enemies. Her Hidden Blade is also not her only weapon as she has a throwable kunai for ranged kills and a set of short swords for melee combat if stealth is off the table.

Another notable thing that was showcased is that exploration is making a comeback in Assassin's Creed Shadows. The game will not always direct you straight to a target and will only give you hints that are collected by quest givers.

While you get some information on what you need to do next, you need to put in effort to actually determine what your next step is. This is a feature that was previously seen in Mirage and was able to work relatively well, according to PCGamer.
