Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has officially been renamed to Dragon Age: The Veilguard and is set to release a brand new gameplay trailer next week.

The latest news about the game was announced by publisher Electronic Arts and game developer BioWare. The latter said that the original title of the game did not reflect how strongly the studio felt about the new heroes and stories.

The studio also said that when Dragon Age: Inquisition launched, BioWare was given an incredible opportunity to explore, test, and validate a variety of gameplay concepts. This was done as they worked to determine what the next game in the franchise could look like.

The developer said that it brought everything to the table, including a multiplayer concept. It added that the time that the team spent experimenting and iterating gradually taught them a lot.

BioWare noted that Electronic Arts' support helped them re-focus on creating an incredible single-player game, according to Gematsu.

BioWare said that it works to create worlds of adventure, conflict, and companionship where players are at the center of everything. It added that every single Dragon Age game has delivered a new standalone story.

These tales, set in the world of Thedas, explore epic locales and threats and thrust players into a new conflict. Every title also introduces a new lead hero, including The Warden, Hawke, and the Inquisitor.

The developer said that fans of the franchise can expect all of these to come back in the latest game in the Dragon Age series. It also noted that similar to other titles, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will feature an amazing cast of companions.

Despite keeping the project mostly under wraps, BioWare has confirmed that the new game will feature seven party members. It also said that Dragon Age: The Veilguard will have "fun and fluid, moment-to-moment combat" while still emphasizing strategy via the unique powers of each companion, said IGN.

A Focus on Companions

The original name of the upcoming game was due to the conclusion of Dragon Age: Inquisition's Trespasser DLC. Since that time, fans have expected a new focus on Solas, the former companion who was revealed to be the Elven god Fen'Harel, also known as the Dread Wolf.

In response to the concerns, BioWare general manager Gary McKay explained that while Solas is indeed still part of the story in the new game, the team wanted a title that reflects a "really deep and compelling group of companions.

He also said that it was important to remind fans that every single Dragon Age game is a new and different experience. McKay added that the team was excited for players to meet, connect, and form their own personal relationships with the unique companions that make up The Veilguard.

While many fans of the franchise are skeptical about the future of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, there are still many who are looking forward to the game. The issues include the fact that last year, BioWare laid off 50 employees, including original Dragon Age writer Mary Kirby, according to PCGamer.
