The Long Dark's Latest Update Lets Players Cheat Death But Makes the Game More Difficult

First-person survival game, The Long Dark, is getting a new update a decade after its alpha was launched in 2014 that now gives players the ability to "cheat death" but makes the game even more difficult.

The latest patch will be the fifth and final part of the game's Tales from the Far Territory DLC and will be coming out next month. The new update is bringing along with it a lot of interesting new elements but the most notable of which is something that players may love or hate.

Letting Players Cheat Death

The new cheat death system will, for the first time in the game's history, let players avoid permadeath when they play in survival mode. Usually, when you die in survival mode, it means that your save file will be deleted, forcing you to start over from scratch.

However, with the new feature, which is completely optional (hurray hardcore lovers!), you can accept death or keep playing.

But the developer, Hinterland Studio, said that using the new cheat death system will make The Long Dark progressively more difficult, noting that it can be used up to four times and that the final life will be "very difficult," according to PCGamer.

The new cheat death system will involve a "series of trade-offs because while you can cheat death, you can't cheat death for free." While this description is relatively vague for any player to completely grasp, there is no further explanation about the new system and how it would work when it actually comes out.

Hinterland said that the new cheat death system is the first change to The Long Dark's permadeath mechanic that has ever been made.

The developer is hoping that this will add a new dimension to gameplay for some of the players who just are not ready to lose their favorite survivor or give others something fresh to experience.

A Variety of New Features

The company also said that if players would rather court death than cheat it, there is also something in the new update that will The latest DLC for The Long Dark will also feature an even more difficult survival experience known as "Misery Mode" that introduces six new afflictions.

There is also a new predator coming to the game, the Cougar, which is capable of moving into any area that players are fond of and competing over territory. The fifth part of the Tales from the Far Territory expansion also brings a new Mountain Pass area as well as a new Tale, said Rock Paper Shotgun.

The latter will wrap up the Rudiger storyline from Signal Void and Buried Echoes. On the other hand, the new Misery Mode is particularly aimed at players who do well in the game's Interloper difficulty, giving them the chance to challenge themselves even further.

While the new afflictions in the new mode have not been revealed, they will be joining the variety of others that are already in the game. These include frostbite, burns, broken ribs, lacerations, and blood loss, according to Yahoo News.
