DayZ developer Bohemia Interactive just announced the zombie survival shooter game's latest expansion, its first in nearly five years, which is known as Frostline and adds a new map, various facilities, and challenging enemies.
The latest content drop will introduce players to the new Sakhal archipelago that features frigid islands and volcanic peaks. A debut trailer and various screenshots show off several industrial facilities, mines, pipelines, and oil derricks that are located within the freezing environment.
DayZ Announces New Frostline Expansion
These same images are also interspersed with steaming sulfurous pools, volcano cones, and rugged rocky shorelines. The new snowy and chilly terrain will most likely be a sharp contrast to DayZ's default setting and will feature a much harsher climate for players to contend with.
The Frostline expansion's new creatures can be hunted and include reindeer, arctic hares, and wolves. What's worth noting is that the store page for the game as well as the announcement of the new expansion made no mention of zombies at all, according to PCGamer.
The game's developer said that the centerpiece of the upcoming expansion is the Sakhal terrain that invites players to explore its rugged and desolate reaches. Compared to previous regions, the new location will have you play as a survivor seeking refuge in the rumored safe haven of Sakhal.
However, you are instead greeted by an unforgiving environment that is frozen both in time and in climate. Despite the region's brutality, Sakhal promises beauty at every perilous turn and features frozen lakes, snow-draped forests, and frosty peaks.

Frostline will be DayZ's first paid expansion since the release of the game's Livonia map in 2019, which garnered middling reception and reviews. The latter will be made free as it is merged into the base game in the upcoming 1.25 patch.
While the region of Sakhal was not based on any actual real-life location, the map in DayZ was inspired by the sub-arctic Kamchatka Peninsula found in northeastern Russia.
While the new expansion can only be wishlisted on Steam for now, Bohemia Interactive confirmed that it will also be available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, said PlayStationLifestyle.
Various New Monsters and Equipment
The developer said that Sakhal harbors both beauty and danger and offers an experience that players of DayZ have never seen before. As you explore, hunt, and survive in the frigid environment, you will be able to uncover mysteries hidden beneath the frostline.
Bohemia Interactive said that the volcanic Sakhal Archipelago spans 32 square miles, "not including ice sheets." On top of the new enemies, the new map also features new diseases, an updated fishing mechanic, and winter-themed cosmetics.
In the Frostline expansion, food and water can freeze, which will require effort when they need to be used once again. Fortunately, however, warm food will not replenish more of players' stats, which makes them more beneficial.
One of the new features in the expansion is a chance of snowing and players can even get caught up in snowstorms. However, there are new gear that you can equip to keep yourself warm, including ski gear and a wolf hood, according to The Gamer.
