Poppy Playtime is the latest video game franchise to get a live-action adaptation as it is set to debut on the big screen, bringing the horror title to a larger audience.
Video game developer Mob Entertainment is working in tandem with Legendary Entertainment in order to create a film based on its toy factory horror game. The former is developing the video game-to-movie adaptation alongside producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford from Angry Films.
Poppy Playtime Live-Action Movie
Details of the upcoming movie's plot and cast have not yet been officially revealed and there is no release date that has been shared so far. Poppy Playtime focuses on Playtime Co., which is a previously bustling toy manufacturer that fell from grace after everyone inside its factory just disappeared.
In the game, players will be given control of a former employee of the company who finds themselves being sucked back into the factory long after the mysterious disappearances.
It doesn't take long for your character to figure out that the toys in the building seem to have become more playful this time around, according to IGN.
The game was first released with its free-to-play first chapter in 2021 and two more chapters were added to the story in 2022 and 2024.
Mob Entertainment said that Poppy Playtime's horror-puzzle gameplay, lore, and twists have managed to attract more than 40 million players across various platforms, including PC, mobile, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation consoles.

Poppy Playtime has apparently become so popular that some of its characters, such as Huggy Wuggy and the Smiling Critters, have shown up in various retailers in the form of collectible figures, plush toys, and costumes.
Mob Entertainment co-founders Zach Belanger and Seth Belange released a joint statement saying that when they started work on Poppy Playtime, they were simply following their passion. They said that they were able to create a series of games and brands with the purpose of inspiring and entertaining people.
Various Video Game Films
In the game, players will have to solve various puzzles while also avoiding being slaughtered by Huggy Wuggy, the monstrous toy that lurks inside the factory.
It is similar to Five Nights at Freddy's which also received a live-action adaptation and is among the many video games that have started to make their way to cinemas, said The Verge.
Other popular titles that have opted to go the Hollywood route are Sonic the Hedgehog and the Super Mario Bros. franchise. Other studios have also picked up other titles, such as The Legend of Zelda, Minecraft, and Stray.
Poppy Playtime's movie version is the third project that puts Legendary with Murphy, who is one of the producers of the long-running Transformers franchise, and Monford. Angry Films is also working on developing an adaptation of the 1980s comic Alien Legion at Warners.
For Legendary, Poppy Playtime puts it into the video game adaptation space, which is now becoming more and more popular. This is probably something that was boosted by the popularity and relative success of HBO's The Last of Us series, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
