Google Fiber is Still Not Coming to New York Any Time Soon, Tech Giant Says

Google recently posted a job listing for Google Fiber in the New York area, getting tech enthusiasts and super-high-speed internet hopefuls excited that the service would be coming to the area. Unfortunately this is not the case, and there are currently no plans for Fiber in the area according to Google.

"Don't read into the job listing," a Google spokesperson told Ars Technica. "We've had a full team of folks working on Fiber in the New York office (and other locations around the world) for years."

Shoot. Any excitement over the job listing was, perhaps not too surprisingly, premature. The staff working on supporting Fiber may be in New York, but the service itself will not be.

"We don't currently have any plans to bring Google Fiber to New York," the spokesperson continued. "We're entirely focused on building out our networks in Kansas City, Austin, and Provo, and on exploring the possibility of bringing Fiber to the 34 locations we announced in February."

Google revealed a selection of cities and areas that are under consideration for Fiber expansion, and like now, New York was not among them. The New York tri-state and metro area, particularly Manhattan, would represent a huge challenge to Google that it doesn't feel prepared to face.

Fiber is still relatively new, and Google clearly wants to focus on the areas it currently supports and those it will be expanding to. The cities they've chosen so far have been in less condensed regions where providing service would be easier. Manhattan and most parts of lower New York have very high population densities, making consistent Fiber support too difficult.  Maybe one day in the future we here in New York will have access to Fiber if the other cities are successful, but don't expect it to be any time soon.
