Perfect Dark Reboot: The Initiative's Upcoming Game is Reportedly in 'A Very Rough State'

The Perfect Dark reboot, which is being made by The Initiative, is reportedly in "a very rough state" and is facing challenges amid its development.

Journalist Jeff Grubb spoke about the reboot title following the sudden closure of various Xbox studios on Tuesday. He said that the fallout from the latest developments is that Perfect Dark is not having the best of times. He added that it does not sound like it's "really come together in any way."

Video game historian Lian Robertson also said that from what little information he has heard about the game and its development, it seems like it is a future video in the making. He added that it is just a "big, protected mess."

A report in June 2023 said that the Perfect Dark reboot was "in the earliest stages" of development and was most likely going to need another two to three years before it is ready for launch.

The project was first announced in 2020 and despite that, there has been no information regarding the reboot since then as years of reported setbacks have stalled development efforts, according to Video Games Chronicle.

The setbacks supposedly include a fraught co-development partnership with Certain Affinity, which is responsible for working on the game between 2019 and 2021, and high attrition at the current developer.

It is rumored that Xbox does not know if it is still willing to take the first-person shooter route for the Perfect Dark reboot. The franchise has historically been in the FPS genre except for the top-down isometric Game Boy Color prequel.

Fans are even more worried following the closure of Arkane Austin, Tango Gameworks, Alpha Dog Games, and Roundhouse Studios. There are also several video game developers who have voiced their opinions regarding the matter, including Moon Studios CEO Thomas Mahler.

Moon Studios is the developer responsible for bringing the highly popular Ori series and the recently released Manor Lords. The company avoided acquisition talks by larger publishers due to potential layoffs and closures, said GameSpot.

In a Very Rough State

The announcement for the Perfect Dark reboot in 2020 came in the way of a reveal trailer where the cinematic gave fans a sense of what the developer was trying to make. It also gave a taste of what a Joanna Dark adventure title might look like in the new generation of gaming.

The video footage showed stunning graphics, a world plagued by ecological disasters, and a sci-fi aesthetic that fans of the franchise are eager to dive into. Currently known information suggests that the reboot is an FPS that leans into the super spy fantasy.

Former design director Dew Murray previously spoke about the broad concept of the game in 2020 where he explained that they wanted to differentiate from the typical "spy fighting" in other traditional FPS games.

Murray said that the upcoming game will let players slide under things, jump over things, and more. He noted that they wanted to play up the physicality and being in the world itself while also getting some of the camera movement that brings a level of excitement, according to GamesRadar.
