Sega just revealed Sonic Rumble, a new battle-royale game that will feature up to 32 players and is the speedy blue hedgehog's first entry into the genre.
The upcoming title is a new mobile platforming battle royale that is expected to launch this coming winter. The game will also feature a variety of levels and obstacle courses where players will have to survive to be the last person standing.
Sonic Rumble Reveal
In the game's reveal trailer, it seems apparent that players will be able to take control of various characters from the universe of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series.
These include Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy, Dr. Eggman, and presumably others. As you play, there will be rings that you can collect that are used to customize characters in special outfits and more.
Despite the reveal, Sonic Rumble does not yet have a set release date but Sega noted that it will be coming out sometime this Winter. And because it is a mobile game, the title is expected to be available on iOS and Android devices, according to GameInformer.

The developer for Sonic Rumble is Rovio, which is the mobile game studio that is responsible for the Angry Birds franchise and was acquired by Sega in 2023 for $775 million.
The reveal trailer for the upcoming Sonic game is reminiscent of Fall Guys, a platformer battle royale where players go through various levels to get to the goal.
Other characters that have so far been revealed for the game include Blaze the Cat, Jet the Hawk, and Vector the Crocodile. The release window for Sonic Rumble comes as the third film in the movie series is set to come to the big screen on Dec. 24, 2024, which further hypes up interest in the Sonic franchise.
Sega's New Battle Royale Game
Additionally, fans of the speedy blue hedgehog in the United States will not have to wait long to play Sonic Rumble. Sega also confirmed that it will be holding a beta test for the upcoming battle royale on May 24, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. PT / 8:00 p.m. ET. It will last until May 26, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. PT / 11:00 p.m. ET.
The company added that fans of the franchise who are interested in participating in Sonic Rumble's beta test will have to fill out an application. It also warned that the deadline for the registrations will be on May 19, 2024, said IGN.
The reveal trailer of Sonic Rumble immediately draws comparisons with other party games, particularly those in the Mario Party franchise. It also looks like the upcoming title's minigames are a little bit less infuriating than those found in Fall Guys' beam struggles.
Some of the rounds seem to focus on traditional platforming mechanics that players will have to get through to reach the goal.
However, there are also other levels that look particularly brutal, and in one instance, you can see a giant chomping robot approaching, knocking out players left and right with reckless abandon, according to Polygon.
