Halo series composer Marty O'Donnell, who wrote the well-known theme song for the sci-fi shooter, has been fired from his role at Bungie.
O'Donnell tweeted the news late last night, though the termination apparently occurred last week. He had been working on the music for the upcoming Destiny, and feels there was no justification for the firing.
"I'm saddened to say that Bungie's board of directors terminated me without cause on April 11, 2014," O'Donnell said on his Twitter account.
Bungie was originally quiet about the news, but made a comment on the topic after O'Donnell's tweet was widely circulated this morning. Bungie posted the following statement titled "There are those who said this day would never come..." on their website:
"For more than a decade, Marty O'Donnell filled our worlds with unforgettable sounds and soundtracks, and left an indelible mark on our fans. Today, as friends, we say goodbye. We know that wherever his journey takes him, he will always have a bright and hopeful future.
We wish him luck in all his future endeavors."
Bungie's statement makes it sound as if the parting of ways was much more amicable than O'Donnell's tweet does, since it states that they parted as friends despite the composer's claim that he was fired without cause. We'll see if any more details emerge from either party, though O'Donnell is likely not allowed to make comments about his former employer, or the terms of his termination. O'Donnell has been creating music for Bungie since the late 1990's.
