Publisher Secret Mode and developer Sumo Newcastle announced their latest title, DeathSprint 66, which provides brutal entertainment through deadly, on-foot eight-player races.
The upcoming Steam game is set in the year 2066 where the Bachman Media Network is trying to dominate the world of brutal entertainment with the latest series of their headline show. DeathSprint 66 pits challengers against each other across a variety of tracks.
Deadly and Entertaining Races
The deadly races take place across extreme obstacle courses that push the boundaries of entertainment where players will run, jump, drift, and slide their way through a series of dangerous tracks all the while chaining together traversals to enter a flow of state and earn HYPE.
HYPE is what fuels a range of exciting and deadly abilities, such as Boost, Seekersaw, Mag-Shield, EMP Blasts, and Proximity Mines. A well-used ability can make or break a player's chances of winning, which makes split-second decisions vital to becoming number one.
While winning is the main point of the deadly races, entertaining the audience that is watching the event leads to bigger rewards. Players' FAME score is a measure of how attractive their characters are to sponsors. The higher this is, the more interested they would be, which would unlock a greater variety of cosmetics, according to Gematsu.

The game's tracks are filled with deadly booby traps, thrilling traversals, and provide runners with various opportunities to take out the competition. The combination of all of these factors makes each race unpredictable and unique.
DeathSprint 66's brief teaser, which was shown during the Future Games Show, did not include any gameplay footage. However, game director Andrew Willans showed a short video of the game in action at this week's GDC. It works a lot like Nintendo's Mario Kart but with a much more gory system.
DeathSprint 66's Inspiration
Willans referenced author Stephen King's book, Bachman, which was the inspiration for the media company in the game. He also credited the inspiration they got from the movie adaptation and other sci-fi takes on the idea of "entertaining ourselves to death," including Death Race 2000.
The various traps that the game would feature include spike rollers, pendulums, lasers, and death pits. Willans added that there will also be weapons for players to use manually, including buzzsaws, said PCGamer.
The runners that players take control of during the deadly races are human clones that were created via neural implants. They are able to grind on rails, lean left or right, and utilize jump pads and zip lines littered across the racetracks.
The new death race game will be released sometime later this year and a PvE mode is already planned to be included. There will also be practice modes and there have been no talks about a battle pass or a cosmetics shop.
The team behind the game also said that DeathSprint 66 features a lot of player-on-player violence, noting that there is a "dark humor to it." While they cited the likes of The Running Man and Death Race 2000, they said that they were going for a similar feeling to The Boys, which is that it is laugh-out-loud funny, according to PCGamesN.
