One-tricking, the practice of exclusively playing a single hero, has long been a point of contention in the Overwatch community. However, the recently implemented changes in Season 9, particularly in hero health and projectile dynamics, have thrust the issue into the spotlight. The debate gained momentum through a Reddit thread on February 26, where players voiced their frustrations with Mercy one-tricks.

Controversy Surrounds Mercy One-Tricking Amidst Season 9 Changes
A Redditor shared, "Every game I've had with a 'one-trick' Mercy has ended in defeat. The other team just wipes us every time, and Mercy will refuse to switch, no matter what hero we need to counter the enemy comp. I've had more stubborn Widows and Genjis willing to make DPS changes than our other support."
Impact of Season 9 Changes on Mercy's Viability
The crux of the problem appears to be the adjustments made to hero health pools and passive self-healing abilities. With these alterations, Mercy struggles to keep up with other support heroes in terms of dealing damage. Zenyatta and Moira, in particular, have become formidable choices due to their enhanced damage-dealing capabilities. This has left teams grappling with the challenge of dealing with a Mercy who refuses to switch, even when her effectiveness is in question.
One frustrated player lamented, "As the other support that has to pick up the slack, it's downright frustrating. Not to say you can't play Mercy, but please know when it's not working and adjust. That's all we're asking." The issue of Mercy one-tricking is not a new discussion. It has been a topic of contention since the original release of Overwatch in 2016.
