Blizzard shook things up in Season 9 of Overwatch 2 by bringing substantial changes to the game, such as increased health pools across the board, DPS passives, and a rework to Pharah, among many others. With all of these adjustments, however, it seems that tanks have been left in the dust. This has led to many players voicing their frustrations on Reddit about the sad state of tanks in the game.

Not in a Good Place

Overwatch 2 made a fundamental change from the original in that instead of two tanks, each team can only have one. While Blizzard's intention for doing this is to help speed things up and make engagements more dynamic, this has not panned out the way the company had hoped.

This is even more so during Season 9, where other roles have received some considerable buffs, including Support heroes having relatively potent self-healing capabilities, and DPS heroes being able to reduce this healing a bit. What about tanks? They just have self-healing and a bit of a boost to their HP, but nothing that can make them stand out. This is problematic considering that there is only one tank hero on each team.

Understandably, many tank heroes do not like the current state of the role in Overwatch 2, so disgruntled players went to Reddit to voice their frustrations.

Redditor viktorian1939 said that the only reason why each team only has one tank now is so that DPS and Support roles have better queue times. They added that picking a tank is basically sacrificing oneself for the team and nothing else.

Another player opined that tanks are nothing more than "meat shields" that just wait for their ultimates to affect change in a match.

What Can Be Done?

Blizzard has to implement significant changes to a number of tank heroes. Reinhardt is one of the original heroes in the game and his kit is just not good in the current state of Overwatch 2.

Wrecking Ball is nothing more of a nuisance and playing this particular tank requires a lot of skill to use effectively.

How about Winston? Increasing his damage a little bit might help, especially considering that other players would just switch to a more damaging DPS hero like Reaper or Junkrat to deal with him.

The only tank heroes that are worth picking right now are Mauga, Roadhog, and D.Va. If Blizzard wants to improve the health of the game, the company should make suitable adjustments in the very near future.

What do you think? Do you agree with other players that tanks in Overwatch 2 are a chore to use? Let us know in the comments!
